May 13, 2017· Tiny end mills are very delicate and break easily – they require very shallow cuts and slow feed rates. Larger mills can remove a lot more material than smaller mills. For the purposes of using a CNC to cut parts out of wood, you’ll want to use larger mills wherever possible.

A typical end mill may be referred to as an “Upcut Spiral” by the CNC Router world. Other than small geometry changes to optimize for wood, end mills and upcut spirals are interchangeable. There are round nose end mills that look similar to drill bits and are great for plunging. V-shaped end mills have a great variety of their own shapes. A long bv-shaped end is great for wood carving and a shallow v-shaped end mill is great for lettering. There is also the square end end mills that create a nice flush bottom of a center cut.

May 04, 2005· Several times, I’ve seen end mills recommended for router work. I’d like to get some consolidated discussion on what their best and safest use is, and what to not use them for. For example, I’m using a 2mm straight router bit to mill grooves 1/8″ to 3/16″ deep (not through the wood) in both soft woods and hard woods.

PASS DEPTH – For wood, my rule of thumb is to always make this number 1/2 the diameter of the tool. So in this case of a 0.125″ (1/8″) end mill, I set the pass depth to 0.0625″ (1/16″). Depending on the wood you are cutting, you might be able to increase this.
